Join the Science Book Club, hosted by EACR Ambassador member Laura Escudero! Every few months we will discuss a different book in a relaxed social environment.
Get comfortable, dim the lights and get ready to immerse yourself in a good book. Let the story take you on a journey about science, and uncover the thoughts, emotions, inspirations and consequences behind the discoveries.
Keeping an open mind and learning about other fields could even help you think outside the box and in the end, inspire your next creative problem-solving idea.
Sound good? EACR Members can join our Science Book Club.
Visit the Book Club group homepage on LinkedIn to join the club and keep up to date with the latest book details, voting information, deadlines and more. Please also ensure you read our rules/code of conduct.
One of the best parts of having online book discussions is getting to know each other. Since it’s unlikely that we will all be together in one session, we thought it would be a great idea to introduce ourselves on LinkedIn. We would love to know where you are based and something about you which other members might find interesting, it can be anything you want to share: a fun fact, your hobbies, if you play any instruments, the nicest place you visited...anything! *Welcome, please introduce yourself here*.
You can add posts, comments and discussions through the members-only LinkedIn group. Please check your LinkedIn notifications for group emails. Visit ‘Managing Your LinkedIn Notification Updates’ for help - https://lnkd.in/d-JT29v. (LinkedIn isn’t perfect and we can only promote one post a week so please do remind yourself to check the group pages regularly so you don’t miss anything! We aim to send key information out via email as a back up too).
Laura is our Book Club host (and EACR Ambassador member). She decides the two books for the next poll but will take suggestions from all group members to add to a growing list.
We send a poll out to group members to choose between two books. You all vote (2 weeks)
We announce the winner….and get reading (6 weeks)
The second-place book is recycled into a future poll
We remind you that you should try and read the book! We send out a poll to decide a good time to begin the discussion (2, 3 or 4 weeks)
We schedule a Zoom meeting for a group discussion and invite you to register (1 hr Zoom)
Laura hosts the discussion in Zoom (she will have a rough plan for themes and questions)
…and we encourage members to discuss the book online for those that can’t attend the Zoom
AND Repeat!
Depending on the length of the book this complete cycle is likely to take 8-12 weeks (from the announcement of poll to choose the book)
Is there a science book you would recommend? Or that you would like to read?
Develop your publishing skills and write a short review (200 words max) to let members know about anything you’ve read recently that you would recommend. You can also tell us about science books you would like to read. We will keep an eye on this section for new books to be included in future polls. Recommend a book here.
In order to keep this group successful, please observe the following simple rules:
We look forward to hearing your discussions. We hope that it might inspire you to think differently, ask new questions and have a positive effect on your work-life balance. We know it's hard to be a cancer researcher - keep learning and discovering!
If you have any questions about the group that haven’t been answered you can post them in the comments and we’ll answer you.
