History and culture

Bergamo is steeped in history, with its well-preserved medieval walls, centuries-old churches, and world-renowned museums. Whether you're wandering through Città Alta or exploring the Lower City, there’s plenty to discover.

Città Alta (Upper Town)

The Upper Town, or Città Alta, is the historic heart of Bergamo, a place where you can step back in time and experience the city's medieval splendour.

Explore the Venetian Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These well-preserved defensive walls offer breathtaking views of Bergamo and, on clear days, the distant Alps.
You can reach the Upper Town by funicular, bus, or take a more adventurous route by walking up the stone stairways, known as "scalette".

Lower City

Bergamo’s Lower City is the modern, vibrant heart of the city. It’s home to many cultural institutions that give insight into the city's rich artistic heritage.

• Accademia Carrara: This renowned museum features a significant collection of works by iconic artists such as Botticelli, Mantegna, Raphael, and Titian.
• Piazza Vecchia: A historic square in Città Alta, Piazza Vecchia is considered "the most beautiful square in Europe" by architect Le Corbusier. It’s home to the Campanone bell tower and stunning landmarks like the Cathedral and Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Dining

Bergamo offers a delightful culinary scene, combining traditional Bergamasco flavours with modern dining experiences. Here are some local favorites highlighted by EACR members where you can savour authentic dishes:

• Cavour Bar Bistrot (Astino Monastery, Lower City): A great spot for a relaxing happy hour or dinner. It’s located just a short drive from the Lower City and offers a calm ambiance.
• Il Circolino (Upper City): This charming spot in Città Alta is perfect for enjoying a drink or light meal while taking in the view.
• Ol Giopi’ e la Margi’ (Lower City): For an authentic Bergamasco dinner, this local restaurant offers classic dishes and a cozy atmosphere.

Don't forget a must-try dish, Casoncelli alla Bergamasca. This traditional stuffed pasta, filled with meat and served with butter and pancetta, is uniquely Bergamasco.
