BACR / EACR Symposia:
Chromatin and Cancer 6 – 8 July 2009 – Transcription and Cancer 8 – 10 July 2009
Introduction
Chromatin and Cancer
The stability of the genome is critical in preventing tumourigenesis. Eukaryotes package their genetic material into chromatin, and this packaging has been shown to be a key player in maintaining genomic stability. In this conference we explore how chromatin influences DNA metabolic events, such as replication, repair and transcription, with a view to understanding how chromatin and its modulation contribute to genetic stability and the prevention of cancer.

Transcription and Cancer
This meeting is intended to address some of the latest advances with respect to transcription factors and cofactors that are connected to cancer. Examples of transcription factors that will be covered include NF-kB, FOXO and HIF, the tumour suppressors p53, APC and WT1, as well as oncogene products such as c-Myc and b-catenin. Their effects on chromatin structure will be featured, as well as other aspects of epigenetics. One area to be covered in detail will be the post-translational control of cancer-related transcription factors, with SUMOylation featuring strongly, as well as phosphorylation, acetylation and ubiquitylation. Wnt and JNK signalling pathways will be included, and transcription regulation of non-coding RNAs that are implicated in cancer.
