EACR offers its congratulations to Professor Harald zur Hausen, a winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine

The European Association for Cancer Research is delighted to offer its congratulations to Professor Harald zur Hausen, a winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
The prize to Harald zur Hausen, for discovering in the 1970s that human papilloma virus (HPV) causes cervical cancer, has received widespread acclaim. Prof zur Hausen disproved the common view of oncologists at the time that viruses did not play a significant role in cancer. His discovery had a huge influence on the way scientists view the early development of tumours and his research led to vaccines that protect young women against cervical cancer by preventing infection with HPV.
Professor zur Hausen’s membership of EACR stretches back to the earliest days of the Association.
